Member of the Month – Brenda Conery

Q:  How did you finally decide to try a new class?   

I didn’t have the self-confidence to join a class until Jeff Cushman approached me after a spin class and said I should try his class.  I told him I couldn’t do what his class was doing and he said he would modify it for me. So . . . I tried it and he modified it and that was the turning point. Because of his HIT class and the classmates, I was able to gain enough confidence to not only go to his class every week, but to also try other classes. I can’t tell you how appreciative I am that he made the effort to ask me because I don’t think I would have done it on my own.  I also can’t begin to tell you how positive all my classmates were. I never felt like a failure.

Q:  What change, be it physical or mental, has most surprised you?

Physical – the ability to really workout.   Push myself. It’s a great feeling that I haven’t had for a long time.

Q:  What changes have you seen in yourself since beginning a regular exercise program? 

Besides my weight (40 lbs.) the fact that I can do a burpee never ceases to amaze me.  I also like the accountability to show up to the classes because now I’ve made new friends and reconnected with some old friends.

Q:  What advice would you give to others who might be facing similar challenges? 

I would say to try a class.  Let them know that you have to modify and the instructors will work with you. I would also say that people going to those classes aren’t there to judge you. They are there for the same reason you are there.

Q:  What keeps bringing you back? 

My overall health, instructors, and classmates keep me coming back!

Q: What would you say to those who might feel intimidated by the idea of walking into the gym and starting a workout program? 

Try it!  No one is looking to judge you.  We are all just working on ourselves! Also, (not to be partial) but try Jeff’s class because you are always smiling when you leave there!

Two years ago Elevate member Brenda Conery started having problems with her thyroid and suffered a knee injury. After these setbacks, she found herself gaining weight each month no matter how often she exercised or how little she ate. She joined Elevate a little over a year ago for a spin class. The weight still didn’t come off, that is, not until she tried a class she never tried before.
