Who is Amy Rockwell?

September 24, 2019 by elevatehealthstudio Leave a Comment

I thought I’d spend some time this week telling you a little bit about who I am. In passing conversations with members there are oftentimes when I hear people say, “Oh, I didn’t know that about you.” So today I’m going to share a little with you….

I am a mom.

I have two wonderful, strong, beautiful, kind, smart daughters.

Charlotte is 8 and in 3rd grade. She is wise beyond her years. Empathetic. Caring. Kind. A rule follower.

Brooklyn is 6 and in 1st grade. Strong. Feisty. A fashionista. Happy go lucky (until it doesn’t go her way :).

They both are amazing in their own way and I am blessed (most days 🙂 to have them call me mom.

I am a teacher.

I have been teaching in Bedford since 2001. First as a seventh grade science teacher and now as the enrichment coordinator at Lurgio. I coached soccer and basketball for numerous years (and played them as well). Working with those stinky, moody, quirky adolescents keeps me young and on top of my game.

I am a widow.

My husband of almost eight years passed away in July 8, 2016 after a very fast four month battle with cancer (We got married on 08/08/08 thinking it’d be lucky….).

This was  just two months after opening Elevate, I wasn’t off to a good start.

However, in the three years since, I have gained strength, perseverance, resiliency and perspective….

I have gained amazing new friendships. Became closer to my incredibly supportive family…

I have learned to do things like run a snowblower (and you should’ve seen my excitement when I discovered it had reverse!).

I have become an expert at unclogging toilets (oh the stories I could tell).

I have discovered I hate weeding, mowing my lawn and weed whacking.

Most importantly, I have learned that things don’t always work out the way you planned, so try to be the best version of yourself everyday. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and put one foot in front of the other. That’s all you can do.

I am a  gym owner.

Many people… friends, families, strangers… have asked, “Why don’t you let the gym go? It’s so much on your plate. You need to lessen your load.”

My answer… the people. The members. The coaches. I feel blessed that I am surrounded by so many WONDERFUL people at Elevate. Working out. Coaching. Becoming friends. The atmosphere energizes me and honestly, some days that is what keeps me going.

I am a person. Loyal. Compassionate. Genuine. Hardworking. Honest.

I work hard every day to be the best version of myself, to be a positive role model for my kids, be a good gym owner, be a great teacher….  It’s not easy. I’m not going to lie.

Some days I make mistakes. Sometimes I mess up. Sometimes I forget things. Juggling a house, motherhood, a fulltime job and a gym isn’t easy.

But I do give it my all.  I promise I am doing my very best to make Elevate the best atmosphere of support, community and accountability for all of the members.

If you’re a member, thank you. I value you.  If I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting you, I hope I get to soon.

If you ever have a question or concern, honestly anything….. Do me a favor. Send me an email. Call me or shoot me text (603-289-6751). Let’s talk about it. Don’t make assumptions.

If you’re not a member and are considering it, please do. Come check us out for a free week and see why some call it a gym, but we call it a family.

So there you have it. Amy Rockwell, owner of Elevate Health Studio, in a nutshell. If you made it to this sentence, thanks for taking the time to learn a little more about me. If you ever are up for sharing your story with me, I’d love to hear it!

Member of the Month June 2019

June 20, 2019 by elevatehealthstudio Leave a Comment

Like many of us, Elevate member Lori John put her family’s needs ahead of her own and carving out enough time to focus on her own health and fitness proved to be a challenge. But this year she was able to overcome that challenge. Lori started exercising on a regular basis, but when winter weather made it too difficult to continue walking outside, she found her way to Elevate.

Q:  How long have you been a member? What keeps bringing you back?

I have been a member since January 2019. I keep coming back because I like the people, environment, and the classes. Also when I signed up I got  the New Year’s special rate.

Q:  Why do you exercise? What benefits do you see?

I exercise because I want to have a strong body as I get older. I see my parents struggle doing things that they had always done, and I don’t want to go that route if I don’t have to. The benefits I’ve seen is in my muscle tone start to improve, my A1C has decreased, and I feel better. My clothes fit differently as well which meant I got to go shopping!

Q:  What are some challenges you face and how did you overcome them?

One challenge is to give myself the time to go to Elevate classes. So to make sure I follow through on this promise to myself I stay at work until it’s time to travel to the gym and bring my clothes with me each time so I don’t go home first.

Q:  What advice would you give to others who might be facing similar challenges?

Decide that you are worth the investment, both time and money…Our lifestyle today is not like it was for our parents or grandparents. We don’t live in the same manner or culture, so most of us have to make exercise a regular routine. It doesn’t come naturally anymore.

Q:  What change, be it physical or mental, has most surprised you?

I’m surprised at how I feel when I walk out the door after class. I might be very hot and very sweaty, but I feel good. I’m also surprised at how I look forward to going. I am also happy about the connections I’m making with different people. Widening my circle.

Q:  What do you do for fun? For yourself?

I’m still figuring out what I like to do for fun, life was too busy when my kids were little. Now that they are older, I have some extra time for me. I like to cook (on my terms), I like to go camping (in a tent), love the beach. I also go kayaking and just a month ago I started to golf again. I have been going to a massage therapist once a month for just about 19 years. Life revolves around my massage nights!

Q:  What changes have you seen in yourself since beginning a regular exercise program?

The number on the scale hasn’t gone down in a long time, but people have commented on how well I’m doing. I don’t see it when I look in the mirror. So the changes they are seeing have to be from coming to Elevate.

Q: What would you say to those who might feel intimidated by the idea of walking into the gym and starting a workout program?

You’ll probably mentally compare yourself to other people there, but remind yourself that you are there for you. Not for anyone else. Their journey and reasons for being there are their own-just as you are looking to improve something in yourself. Instructors will offer modifications for pretty much everything so it will be your work out at your level. You can do this—you’re worth it!

Member of the Month – Brenda Conery

May 6, 2019 by elevatehealthstudio Leave a Comment

Q:  How did you finally decide to try a new class?

I didn’t have the self-confidence to join a class until Jeff Cushman approached me after a spin class and said I should try his class.  I told him I couldn’t do what his class was doing and he said he would modify it for me. So . . . I tried it and he modified it and that was the turning point. Because of his HIT class and the classmates, I was able to gain enough confidence to not only go to his class every week, but to also try other classes. I can’t tell you how appreciative I am that he made the effort to ask me because I don’t think I would have done it on my own.  I also can’t begin to tell you how positive all my classmates were. I never felt like a failure.

Q:  What change, be it physical or mental, has most surprised you?

Physical – the ability to really workout.   Push myself. It’s a great feeling that I haven’t had for a long time.

Q:  What changes have you seen in yourself since beginning a regular exercise program?

Besides my weight (40 lbs.) the fact that I can do a burpee never ceases to amaze me.  I also like the accountability to show up to the classes because now I’ve made new friends and reconnected with some old friends.

Q:  What advice would you give to others who might be facing similar challenges?

I would say to try a class.  Let them know that you have to modify and the instructors will work with you. I would also say that people going to those classes aren’t there to judge you. They are there for the same reason you are there.

Q:  What keeps bringing you back?

My overall health, instructors, and classmates keep me coming back!

Q: What would you say to those who might feel intimidated by the idea of walking into the gym and starting a workout program?

Try it!  No one is looking to judge you.  We are all just working on ourselves! Also, (not to be partial) but try Jeff’s class because you are always smiling when you leave there!

Two years ago Elevate member Brenda Conery started having problems with her thyroid and suffered a knee injury. After these setbacks, she found herself gaining weight each month no matter how often she exercised or how little she ate. She joined Elevate a little over a year ago for a spin class. The weight still didn’t come off, that is, not until she tried a class she never tried before.
